Why Is Mic Placement Important?

When it comes to achieving the best possible sound quality, mic placement matters. There’s a lot more to getting good sound out of a microphone than simply standing behind it and speaking directly into it. Proper mic placement offers optimal signal to noise ratio, gain before feedback and helps you achieve the mic’s “sweet spot”.

If there is going to be background noise during your next event, using a directional microphone is your best bet. These mics work to reject sound coming from nearby allowing you to achieve proper signal to noise ratio.

It’s important to understand your microphone’s angle of rejection especially when it comes to aligning floor monitors or side fills. Keep in mind that when a sound source is closer to the microphone, the mic will put out a stronger signal. This is ideal if you want to add some depth to your vocals, but don’t over do it.

To find the “sweet spot” it’s going to take some trial and error. The best way to find the optimal sound is to literally move the mic around until it sounds best. If you’re using an omnidirectional microphone you can test the sound by covering one ear and listening to the sound with the other. For a cardioid mic, cover one ear and cup your hand behind the other and finally, for a stereo pair cup both hands behind your ears.

How Does It Work?

Sound waves need to be converted into electrical voltages and then converted back into soundwaves so an audience can hear the message through speakers. The microphone is a device that makes this all possible and they were first used with early telephones and radio transmitters.

How Did It All Begin?

Sir Charles Wheatstone was the first person to coin the phrase “microphone” in 1827 but it wasn’t until 1876 when Emile Berliner invented the first microphone used as a telephone voice transmitter. Soon after, the Bell Telephone company purchased the patent from Berliner for $50,000.

In 1942, the first ribbon microphone was invented for radio broadcasting and in 1964, Bell Laboratories received a patent for an electret microphone. This revolutionized the microphone industry with close to one billion produced each year. As technology continued to advance, more dynamic microphones were created which leaves us with the clear sound we hear today!
